Diskover ONTAP StorageGRID 2026-10-06What was announced
Diskover Data announced a collaboration with NetApp that extends the Diskover Platform's governed visibility and control to ONTAP and StorageGRID environments. The focus is file-intensive estates in media and entertainment, semiconductor design (EDA) and comparable research-heavy sectors — the places where a single project can scatter millions of files across volumes, shares and buckets.
The commercial half of the deal matters as much as the technical half: customers will be able to purchase the Diskover Platform through NetApp, rather than buying a third-party tool alongside a NetApp array and integrating it themselves. Diskover describes the aim as putting specialised discovery and cataloguing into workflows customers already run, on premises, in the cloud and across heterogeneous storage.
What the catalog actually captures
Diskover's DataDiscovery uses a set of specialised scanners to index metadata in place across ONTAP and StorageGRID — no data movement, no staging copy. For each file the index records ownership, permissions, age, cost and project context, and presents the result as a searchable, governed catalog rather than a nightly CSV.
That distinction is the whole product. Capacity tooling tells you a volume is 84% full; it does not tell you which of four projects owns the 40 TB, whether the owning group still exists, or what that space costs per month at the tier the data currently sits on. Project context plus cost plus ownership in one index is what turns a storage report into a delete-list someone will actually sign off on.
How it is deployed
The platform deploys entirely inside the customer's own environment — on premises or in their virtual private cloud — and connects to ONTAP and StorageGRID using native scanning. Nothing in the announcement suggests data leaves the environment for the cataloguing step, which is the argument that gets these tools past storage and security review in regulated shops.
Availability
Diskover Platform is available now for ONTAP and StorageGRID environments. Purchase through NetApp begins in November 2026. Diskover is also a Gold sponsor of NetApp INSIGHT 2026, which is where most of the field conversation about this will happen.
Our read
This is a metadata-layer play, not a storage-layer one, and it is the direction the file-services market has been drifting for a while: the array is increasingly commoditised, and the defensible value sits in knowing what the bytes are. For ONTAP admins the practical question is not whether a catalog is useful — quota reports, volume show output and audit logs already tell you something — but whether one index can answer "who owns this, what does it cost, and can we delete it" in one query instead of three tools and a spreadsheet.
Two things to check before committing: whether in-place scanning is incremental and event-driven enough to keep a multi-petabyte estate honest without rescanning, and what the licensing shape looks like once it is sold through NetApp. Neither is answered in the announcement. If you are new to the storage side of this, our ONTAP reference covers the volume and quota mechanics the catalog reads from, and the content library collects the surrounding material we have tracked on data management tooling. For ONTAP changes that affect what a scanner can see, the what-changed tracker is the fastest place to look.
