NCDA Study Area

The NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA, ONTAP) exam tests real-world ONTAP administration: storage objects, protocols, data protection, efficiency, and day-2 operations. These pages cover the concepts with the commands you are expected to know.

NCDA study path
Exam info The current NCDA ONTAP exam is NS0-162 (verify the current number and blueprint on netapp.com/certifications). It is a scenario-based exam — expect "which command / which behavior" questions more than theory questions.

ONTAP fundamentals

Clusters and HA pairs, SVMs, aggregates, FlexVol and FlexGroup, WAFL, snapshots, thin provisioning basics, management surfaces.

Storage networking

NFS, SMB, S3, FC, FCoE, iSCSI, NVMe/FC and NVMe/TCP, LIFs, routing, export policies and shares.

Data protection

Snapshots, SnapMirror (async, sync, SM-BC), SnapVault, MetroCluster, NDMP, SnapLock, ransomware protection.

Storage efficiency

Thin provisioning, deduplication, compression, compaction, FlexClone, and how to measure savings.

HA, QoS & security

Takeover/giveback, cluster switchover, storage QoS and adaptive QoS, encryption (NVE/NAE), RBAC, monitoring.

Practice questions

Interactive NCDA-style questions with detailed explanations. Click an answer to check yourself.

Suggested study order

  1. Fundamentals — the object model everything else hangs off
  2. Storage networking — how clients reach data
  3. Data protection — the highest-weighted exam domain
  4. Storage efficiency — why ONTAP makes capacity go further
  5. HA, QoS & security — resilience, control, and day-2 ops
  6. Practice questions — then re-read the weak areas
Study tip NCDA questions love subtle traps: snapshot reserve vs. aggregate reserve, SnapMirror direction (source → destination), what happens when a volume hits its size limit, and which protocol a feature applies to. Pay attention to those distinctions as you read.
