Data governance ONTAP StorageGRID 2026-10-17What NetApp and Diskover announced
NetApp and Diskover Data are bringing Diskover Platform’s metadata discovery and cataloging to ONTAP and StorageGRID estates. Diskover says its DataDiscovery scanners index metadata in place and collect ownership, permissions, age, cost and project context into a searchable catalog. The pitch is visibility over large unstructured-data estates without first relocating the underlying files or objects.
This is a partner product and procurement announcement, not a new ONTAP or StorageGRID release. Diskover Platform is available now for those environments; purchasing through NetApp is scheduled to begin in November 2026. The announcement does not name an ONTAP or StorageGRID minimum version, license bundle, price or sizing model.
Discovery spans two different data surfaces
ONTAP and StorageGRID should not be treated as interchangeable targets. ONTAP commonly presents file data through NAS protocols, while StorageGRID is NetApp’s object-storage platform. A catalog that crosses both can provide a shared search and governance view, but the announcement does not document identical scanner depth, refresh behavior or supported metadata on each platform.
Diskover identifies media production, electronic design automation, life sciences and scientific research as target workflows. Those environments need more than a filename search: project association, ownership, age and storage-tier cost can determine whether data is retained, charged back, archived or prepared for another workflow.
“In place” does not mean zero operational impact
Diskover says the platform runs inside the customer’s environment—on premises or in a virtual private cloud—and connects through native scanning. That narrows the data-movement boundary, but it does not answer the operational questions an implementation team still has to test: which identities and permissions the scanners require, how namespace traversal affects controllers and clients, how often metadata is refreshed, and how deleted or permission-changed content ages out of the catalog.
The distinction matters for governance. A catalog can reveal a policy problem, while enforcement may require a separate approved workflow. The release says teams can act on retention and access policy, but it does not publish the exact write actions, approval controls, audit trail or rollback behavior for either storage platform.
What the announcement proves—and what it does not
The confirmed change is commercial and integrative: NetApp customers gain a partner route to a specialized catalog that covers ONTAP, StorageGRID and surrounding heterogeneous storage. NetApp’s statement also distinguishes Diskover’s industry-focused discovery from NetApp’s own metadata catalog; it does not provide a feature-by-feature comparison or claim the two are replacements for one another.
Diskover reports that its customers typically reclaim 10–30% of storage footprint and can achieve a 30–60 day return on investment. Those figures are vendor-reported portfolio claims. The release supplies no workload sample, measurement method or NetApp-specific result, so they are not a forecast for an ONTAP or StorageGRID deployment.
A practical evaluation checklist
- Scope: inventory the ONTAP SVMs, shares and StorageGRID tenants or buckets to be cataloged, then confirm supported versions and metadata fields.
- Security: document scanner credentials, network paths, encryption, catalog access controls and the location of every stored metadata field.
- Load: baseline client latency, controller utilization and object request rates before scanning; repeat the measurements during the initial crawl and refresh cycle.
- Governance: separate discovery, recommendation and enforcement permissions, and require an auditable approval path before retention or access changes.
- Economics: test reclaim and chargeback findings against a representative namespace before applying the vendor’s broad savings claims to a business case.
The immediate value is a governed inventory across file and object estates. The buying decision depends on the details the announcement leaves open: compatibility, scan architecture, privilege boundaries, enforcement controls, performance overhead and licensing.
