What the CVE records say
CVE-2018-5490 — Read-Only export policy rules are not correctly enforced in Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3 Release Candidate versions and therefore may allow more than "read-only" access from authenticated SMBv2 and SMBv3 clients. This behavior has been resolved in the GA release. Customers running prior release candidates (RCs) are requested to update their systems to the NetApp Data ONTAP 8.3 GA release.
Impact
This vulnerability allows write access to “read-only" CIFS data from authenticated SMBv2 and SMBv3 clients which could result in the deletion or manipulation of data that is intended to be "read-only".

What to do
- Check the affected products listed above against the official advisory's affected-versions table — that is where the exact ONTAP 9 release, ONTAP tool, or management product versions are named.
- If affected and a fixed release exists, plan the upgrade — see the ONTAP upgrade runbook.
- If exploitation is listed as "active", treat remediation as urgent and review exposure (management LIFs, ONTAP S3, SnapMirror endpoints).
- Harden in parallel: security hardening baseline and ransomware protection on ONTAP.
