Cluster LIF Problems: Node or Ring Connectivity

A node is unhealthy or out of quorum, cluster commands are slow, or cluster LIFs/ports appear down.

What ONTAP is telling you

Cluster LIFs carry private intracluster traffic. Their operational state, current port, cluster port health, and ring quorum evidence show whether this is an interface/port path problem or a broader node issue.

EMS reference Review vifmgr.*, clus.*, and port-health events that match the incident window; no single event is sufficient.

How to confirm

cluster show
network interface show -role cluster -fields lif,status-admin,status-oper,curr-node,curr-port,home-node,home-port
network port show -ipspace Cluster -fields node,port,link,health-status,health-degraded-reasons
cluster ring show -node <node>
event log show -time >1h -severity ERROR

Output shape: Cluster show exposes node health/eligibility; the LIF and port views expose down state or unexpected placement. Ring output should be recorded exactly, including quorum/master state.

The fix

Restore the failed cluster network path identified by port, cabling, switch, or LIF evidence. Cluster-network changes can affect quorum: use the platform wiring documentation and open a support case before forceful ring or membership operations.

How to prevent it

Monitor both cluster links, preserve redundant switch/cabling design, validate cluster ports after maintenance, and keep a current cabling map and AutoSupport record.

Sources and version relevance

Commands and claims are limited to material already represented in the Black Box archive. CLI links target the archived ONTAP 9.19.1 reference; fields and availability can differ by release. Check your ONTAP version and on-cluster command ? before production use.
