wafl.vol.outOfInodes: Volume Cannot Create Files

Applications can read existing data but cannot create new files; ONTAP reports wafl.vol.outOfInodes.

What ONTAP is telling you

The volume has exhausted its available file/inode count. Free byte capacity and available files are separate limits, so a volume can have space left and still reject file creation.

EMS reference wafl.vol.outOfInodes

How to confirm

event log show -message-name wafl.vol.outOfInodes -time >1h
volume show -vserver <svm> -volume <volume> -fields files,files-used,files-maximum-possible,available
volume show -vserver <svm> -volume <volume> -instance

Output shape: Compare Files, Files Used, and the maximum possible file count. The event identifies the affected volume; do not infer inode exhaustion from byte percent-used alone.

The fix

If the volume is eligible and below its maximum, increase the file count with volume modify -files. Otherwise remove/archive files or redesign/shard the namespace. Validate the new limit and watch file creation before closing the incident.

How to prevent it

Trend files-used as well as bytes, alert before the configured file limit, and capacity-plan workloads that create many small files. FlexGroup layouts need constituent-aware planning.
